ABOUT MARCEDES LEWIS FOUNDATION                                                                                                                                                 The Marcedes Lewis Foundation was established by Marcedes Lewis to support the youth in our community. His love of children and the success of a childhood dream prompted Marcedes to start this Foundation.

The goal of the Foundation is to award scholarships to youth in the community who otherwise would not be able to participate in youth sports such as football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, etc. The scholarship recipients will be required to maintain certain academic standards and report to the Foundation periodically.

The Foundation will follow each recipient through his/her youth and high school years in the hope of being able to assist in any necessities that he/she may incur as they enter college.

The ultimate goal is for the Foundation to grow to a point to support sending a child to college on a full ride. The college recipient would also have requirements that will have to be met to receive a scholarship renewal each year.

But that hasn’t kept the 2002 Poly High graduate and extraordinary tight end of the Jacksonville Jaguars from continuing his off-season community philanthropy.

Indeed, for the third straight year, Lewis will be hosting a football camp Saturday at Poly between 8a.m. and 3p.m., with more than 600 youngsters 7-17 already having pre-registered to participate in a free clinic that’s coordinated by Lewis’ mother, Yvonne Withers.

“We’re not only going to be teaching about football, but also about life,” said Lewis, who had a breakout season in 2010 with the Jaguars with 58 receptions, 10 touchdowns and a Pro Bowl appearance.

Lewis said some of the volunteers who will be present are such football figures as Leonard Russell, Chuckie Miller, Herschel Dennis, Jason Bell, DeShaun Foster, Jarrad Page, Matt Ware, Darnell Bing and James Washington.

He also said firefighter, military and police personnel will be on hand to speak to the kids.

The Naples Rib Company is supplying the food for the event and Adidas the T-shirts. Champion’s Quest, a Los Alamitos conditioning academy that trains student-athletes, also has an involvement.

After a four-year career at UCLA in which he won the John Mackey Award his senior season in 2005 as the top tight end in college football, Lewis was a first-round pick of the Jaguars in 2006. In a run-oriented Jacksonville offense fueled, ironically, by Maurice Jones-Drew, a Bruin teammate whom he played against in high school, Lewis didn’t catch a lot of passes during his first four seasons with the team.
But that all changed last fall when he and his quarterback, David Garrard, turned into one of the league’s more dangerous combinations.

“They put me in position to make plays, and they had a lot of them for No.89,” said Lewis, referring to his uniform number.

The Jaguars think so highly of the 27-year-old Lewis that they put a franchise tag on him in February, meaning Lewis, a free agent, would make about $7.3 million on a one-year tender.

Lewis wants to remain in Jacksonville, and hasn’t slacked off in his workouts despite not knowing if there is even going to be an NFL season.

He’s been training regularly at an MMA establishment in West Hollywood called True Warrior Fitness with many other NFL players, including Green Bay Packers star linebacker Clay Matthews.

“I have no clue when everything is going to be settled between the owners and players union,” he says. “I just know my goal is to get better every year, and build a nice legacy for myself.”

He’s certainly doing that in Long Beach.

His camp the first year drew 368, then went up to 440, and will reach record heights Saturday.

“This is my way of giving back to a city that has been good to me,” says Lewis, who bought his mother a home in Lakewood when he signed with the Jaguars five years ago.

Jones-Drew won’t be present Saturday, and Lewis says his good friend no longer kids him about Poly’s nationally televised loss to Jones-Drew’s Concord De La Salle team in 2001.

“Maurice has become tired of getting on me about that game, which we never should have lost,” said Lewis, who’s right since that Poly team was brimming with such talented players as Dennis, Bing, Winston Justice, Manuel Wright and himself.

What a turnout for the Thayer family fundraiser Monday night at Kelly’s, with the Naples restaurant filled to capacity for an affair at which more than $15,000 was raised.

“The phones were ringing all day, and we had to turn a lot of people away,” said Sean Kieva, Kelly’s bartender/building contractor/waiter/truth purveyor/bouncer/palm reader.

As always, the local emcee emeritus, Ravishing Rick Paap, did a terrific job, inspiring a lot of patrons to loosen their purse strings with his masterly elocution.

The Thayers, who have lost two children – Jalen, 15, and Breanna, 5 – from brain cancer – were present with their two sons, Bailey, 13, and Sammy, 8.

Lance Thayer gave a moving speech about his family’s ordeal that has been exacerbated by his having lost his teaching position at Millikan High and his having to move the family out of its east Long Beach home by the end of the month because of foreclosure.

“I’m overwhelmed by the generosity and warmth shown by so many people towards us in our community,” said Jennifer Thayer, Lance’s wife.

The energetic chairman of the event, Donna Albano, natch, won the meatball contest, befitting a young lady known far and wide as The Meatball Queen.

She did have fierce competition, and afterward her meatballs and those of the other participants were served to the guests, along with pasta prepared by the Kelly’s chefs.

Those who persist in talking about LeBron James’ “greatness” should be forced to watch fourth-quarter replays of the 2011 NBA Finals between James’ Miami Heat and the Dallas Mavericks every day for the remainder of the year as penance for such wrongheaded thinking.

Why did I know beforehand that John Morris’ attempt to put on a July 4 weekend fireworks show in front of McKenna’s on Alamitos Bay would never make it past some obscure civil servant who knows what’s best for all of us?

That popular UPS guy you’ve seen delivering merchandise around Long Beach for the past 30 years is named Larry Overton, a 1974 Lakewood High graduate who was quite a volleyball star at that school as well as at Long Beach City College.
